I have had a terrible past with web hosts it nearly put me of doing websites/forums infact it did for 6 months after i brought some hosting for a lifetime (yes i was stupid back then) anyways they sent everyone who had hosting with them a email asking them to upgrade to a gold package for £150 which is about $320 for you american members i didnt take them up on this offer good job really because two weeks after that email they vanished of the face of this earth i just feel bad for the people that may of paid them,

Try Dreamhost...I have a link in the footer to their site along with my affiliate link. This site is currently on Dreamhost. Hostgator is another well-known and good quality host.

Thanks i've heard of hostgator but this time i went with a local web host because i was so put of by what happened last time thats what worries me the most waking up oneday and the website gone but thats just my anxieties i am starting another website after christmas and this time im going to go with a host online i was also looking into the hosting at 123-reg its cheap and they have won awards,

I'm hosted by helloweb. It is very good hosting. It has 500MB of disk space but now the servers are very slow because it is doing the upgrade

Anyway...
I have a FreeBSD Virtual Dedicated Server hosted at RootBSD; I've had no bad experiences with them what so ever; they have been really great..with nice prices and fast support...I'm on the $19.95p/mo plan because my site doesn't have much visitors yet; But I'm slowly getting there =]
If sitting in front of a PuTTY window tweaking your MySQL installation to work the best isn't your thing; you could settle for NearlyFreeSpeech; A GREAT pay-per-byte free host =]

Well if you would like a free webhost that is better then paid webhosting...

but,

The servers are slow so you can upgrade your account for 2$/ 5$ so it will become faster
