How long does it take to learn PHP to such a level that you can produce scripts and plugins (such as the ones in the dowbloads section)?

I'm also looking for a good tutorial for a beginner like me...
For me a few years but I think if you are younger and willing to devote the time you can certainly advance quickly. Some self-learn better than others. For me I am just doing too much to totally concentrate of my coding abilities. I have to learn to code, design, and sysadmin evenly.

As a matter of fact I just spent 8 hours fixing a server problem from SSH.
Years? I've started learning with a few online tutorials, but to be honest i'm finding it quite difficult and not making a whole lot of progress. can anyone recommend a good book for beginners to php?
Its probably going to take a few months to grasp the main concepts, but a few years to get to Labroccas level where you can develop scripts and software.

It depends how motivated you are really.
A few years to get to such a level i presume. As for tutorials, w3schools is a good place to start

I also favor w3schools, it has to be one of my favorites....
Great place for html and javascript also

I think the cool thing about learning php is that your also learning C. cause there based off the same syntax.
I've tried to many times. I'm young and so I could give it time, there are many great sites out there which can be good to learn from including W3Schools.
