Has anyone had success just selling links to others directly on a website instead of using something like adsense?
The only trouble is that you need to build a good site with plenty of traffic (or high pagerank) before you are able to sell any links. and obviously that takes time
Yes I have on a number of sites. Depending on the site and it's genre you can make $10-$100 a month. Some sites I like to sell for a year. Link selling while against Googles policy imho is worth it. I don't think Google should be dictating to people how they can make income.

Google is getting a bit too influential on the internet. Its your site and you should have the choice. I've sold a few links (and bought some) but i have never really made much using this method
I've never been able to sell a link, my sites doesn't have any pagerank so its very hard.
This is one of the best ways of getting a guaranteed income (adsense can very). In fact, i have seen websites that exist just for the purpose of selling links
