Overrated as in???
Security - that very few VB forums are hacked? No, I think it is very important to have secure software.
Security updates - that updates and patches are released ASAP. I think its VERY important that updates be released as soon as a problem is found.
Modifications - that the modifications at vbulletin.org are reviewed by the core VB developers? This is an outstanding service that VBulletin.org offers. If a mod is found to have a security hole, its removed and notifications are set out to everyone that had it marked as installed.
This is one VERY important area where just about all other forum software falls behind. I have been using smf for about 3 years, and have NEVER received a security notification from them about an insecure modification.
And then all of that to vbulletin has some of the best commercial grade add-ons that I have ever seen. If you are looking for a chat room, classifieds section or even a pictures gallery, someone has made a top notch commercial grade add-on to suite your needs.
SEO features - VB has excellent SEO features built in. And then there are some commercial grade add-ons that will enhance those features.
Do a google search for a forum on a certain topic. Chances are a forum running VB will be at the top of the list.
From July 2008 - January 2009 I ran a forum with SMF. Even though the site had a couple of thousand post, google indexed a few pages a day. A couple of days after I migrated the forum to VB, the number of pages indexed daily went from 2 or 3 to 30 - 50.
Changes and updates to the forum - I think its important that a forum software change with the times. People want more social interaction - such as customized profiles, chat rooms, profile comments and picture galleries.
VBulletin has changed and adapted with the times. This makes it an industry leader, not a follower.
So, in my opinion, NO, VBulletin is not overrated at all.
