What do you think? Is vBulletin overrated? Sometimes I think, the admin panel is from the year 1995 and I read (so it can be false) that it takes a lot of resources.

MyBB is just the best!
Well this is quite long story for those who remember times when IPB was free, VB started developing.
And then IPB gone paid and many people gone mad with this decision so they switched to VB in rage , they would rather pay for VB instead for IPB.And many of those members today are rating a VB batter in pure rage against IPB.
Also i don't think VB is that much overrated , it have many mods and features , and new major version is to be relesed. So constant development is making VB very, very good.
And support team there is great from what i heared.
When that happened I was 8 years old I think Tongue, so I never have knew that. Nice to know Big Grin. vB has indeed a lot of mods but look MyBB is also awesome!

Old story as i said , not even i remember it completly only the information that i gathered over the internet when i was searching for forums.
But i do remember and allways will the stupid mistake that made ipb gone paid.
Its sad that they lost so many members, but that how the things are.
Indeed, IPB was and is still good software Big Grin.

Overrated as in???

Security - that very few VB forums are hacked? No, I think it is very important to have secure software.

Security updates - that updates and patches are released ASAP. I think its VERY important that updates be released as soon as a problem is found.

Modifications - that the modifications at vbulletin.org are reviewed by the core VB developers? This is an outstanding service that VBulletin.org offers. If a mod is found to have a security hole, its removed and notifications are set out to everyone that had it marked as installed.

This is one VERY important area where just about all other forum software falls behind. I have been using smf for about 3 years, and have NEVER received a security notification from them about an insecure modification.

And then all of that to vbulletin has some of the best commercial grade add-ons that I have ever seen. If you are looking for a chat room, classifieds section or even a pictures gallery, someone has made a top notch commercial grade add-on to suite your needs.

SEO features - VB has excellent SEO features built in. And then there are some commercial grade add-ons that will enhance those features.

Do a google search for a forum on a certain topic. Chances are a forum running VB will be at the top of the list.

From July 2008 - January 2009 I ran a forum with SMF. Even though the site had a couple of thousand post, google indexed a few pages a day. A couple of days after I migrated the forum to VB, the number of pages indexed daily went from 2 or 3 to 30 - 50.

Changes and updates to the forum - I think its important that a forum software change with the times. People want more social interaction - such as customized profiles, chat rooms, profile comments and picture galleries.

VBulletin has changed and adapted with the times. This makes it an industry leader, not a follower.

So, in my opinion, NO, VBulletin is not overrated at all.
VB dont get hacked. LOL. Shit man. I was a member at a black hat seo site that was powered by VB. And it got hacked on average once every 2 months. It has some kick ass hackers as members also. So dunno. Perhaps this software attracts hackers? Either way it does get hacked. And quite a bit actually.
The one funny side bit to this is the hackers always got there own back. Dont screw with a black hat seo site is all i can say. They will destroy you if there any good. Seen it with my own eyes many times.
Actually VB is good in the sense that it's code is secure and there are not much exploits to it...

We can see a huge list of exploits for other forum softwares at milworm.com, but vB is rarely on that list....
The constant research and updates make it even more suitable....
vB being a commercial tool, a large no of people have taken to the business of creating vB templates and add-ons and selling them...
But myBB and phpBB has a good and large community which develops a variety of add-ons for free or price...

In effect, vBulletin is preferable for someone who can pay for it and the add-ons and also the upgrades.... while most people like me are happy that there are free tools like myBB and phpBB etc... SMF is another good toool, but it haven't got god community which hinders it's developments...
I think most people think it is overrated because they dont want to spend so much money just to get forum software, when there are free options, but they want Jelsoft to make vB free so they finally can get there hands on it.
vB is not overrated, is a really good software, secure, with a LOT of Professional Addons and with a commercial support.

Many big boards use this, vB has a really SEO suite http://www.vbseo.com, its really professional and Full.

So, vB is overrated No, but a good forum dont depend of the CMS, depend of the content (original) and SEO.
