What’s your take on directory submission?

Here’s my take. If you have some money to spend, it might not be a bad idea to use one of those directory submission services to submit your website to hundreds of directories. I don’t think doing this by yourself is the best way to use your time or energy.
I have used directories for SEO advantages but really very little traffic has resulted directly from them. I tend to shy away from paid directories especially the ones that charge a yearly fee. I have paid for a few but usually I look for at least a PR2. The most I have ever paid was $10 I believe.
Dir submission has been great for me! In the beginning when a blog/site is new, dir submission is the best way to get backlinks. And as your blog gets well known, links come in automatically.

But Dir submission has also brought me, very little but targeted traffic!

Yeah, you can never expect traffic from search directories. Even if your website is listed in major search directories like DMOZ and Yahoo Directory, you barely get any traffic.

Directories are never about traffic, but rather links. Google and other SE's are seeming to devalue directory links more and more, but for niche directories I think this may be avoided.

I both run directory submission services for clients and submit my own as well - certainly has never hurt.
Directory have been great for me as well. I just post in those that are popular or have a good ammount of links and of course ones related to my site's niche.
Directories haven't worked very well for me in the past. I find just building a quality website and getting it into google is the best way of getting about. Submitting to directories takes time and isn't really worth the effort
Directories are wirth less, because google has devalued links from them. The only directory that could be useful is dmoz, and its really hard to get in there because there are some really bad editors.
I would do it anyway, if the price wasn't too high. BTW, does anyone know a good directory submission service that doesn't cost too much.
I think you should just submit your site to dmoz and a few other big directories and then leave it. Theres no point in paying for sbmitting or anything like that
