Is it better to create a site from scratch or just modify an exisiting template? What if you're using software such as wordpress or something?

It depends. Most of my blogs use a heavily modified version of wordpress, which i change a little bit from site to site (e.g. the colours). But for paid projects i create sites from scratch. Its actually easier because you don't have code that can create issues for you.

Time is a factor to consider. If you are in a hurry, its probably better to just modify an existing template, but if times not an issue you might aswell build a site from scratch and customize it as much as possible.

I agree with the post above. You wouldn't get the same sense of pride if you just took a template and unedited it, however if you edited and tried to create something yourself it is worth it.
